A new patient exam can be anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. We begin the exam by taking vitals bilaterally in the seated, supine and standing positions. We then sit and chat about your past medical history, family history and current complaints. After that we will measure your balance, limits of stability and gait analysis, followed by some functional testing for the cortical regions of the brain as well as a full cranial nerve exam as a way of measuring the functional output of the brainstem. We will perform a sensory and nerve root evaluation as well as any additional testing needed to rule out concerns related to your chief complaint. After your exam, Dr. Trainor will review your results and create a thorough plan of action, in which you will receive on your report of findings (ROF) day.
Appointment times and frequency are based on your physical exam findings. The reason for this is that some people may not be able to handle 1 hour of continuous work. Others may need a full hour because of the need for longer breaks or face movement challenges. Either way, Dr. Trainor does her best to work with each patient individually to find a length and frequency that works with the patient's nervous system as well as their day-to-day schedule.
Most likely not. Dr. Trainor will shift therapies based on a persons threshold at time of appointment. The brain and body are very dynamic so treatments will be fluid and incoporate different modalities based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to how the autonomic nervous system is integrating each treatment.
